Despite working on the tune for nearly an hour, Davis was unhappy with this version of "Limbo" (also called "Melody" on the track sheet), and it was remade in Columbia's New York Studio B on May 16.

This session was scheduled at the end of another tour of the western U.S., during which Ron Carter was replaced by Albert Stinson or Buster Williams. The inaugural Berkeley Jazz Festival occurred on April 7-8 at Berkeley's Greek Theatre, and Davis was on the bill with Bill Evans, Horace Silver, John Handy, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Gerald Wilson's Big Band, and Big Mama Thornton. Afterward the Davis Quintet was booked for two weeks at the Both/And Club in San Francisco (April 11-23); they then moved to the Penthouse Club in Seattle (April 24-29), and ended their tour with three nights at the Sands Hotel in Hollywood (May 5-7), this studio date, and a one-night engagement at UCLA (May 12). They returned to New York and played the Village Vanguard again (June 2-4), then went to the Village Gate (July 4-16 opposite Dizzy Gillespie, and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman). During a break in the latter engagement they played at the Watts Summer Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles (August 21-22).
