James Hale
(Photo forthcoming -- since 1998) I'm 43, married, two daughters. I live in a small town just outside Ottawa, the capital of Canada. I'm a partner in a corporate communications and design company, but I manage to squeeze in some writing about jazz, as well. Some of you may have seen my work in Down Beat, Coda or The Jazz Report. I also write regularly about jazz for The Ottawa Citizen. I've also hosted and produced a radio program about jazz for a number of years back in the '80s, and helped run a jazz festival here in Ottawa. I played drums and guitar as a kid, but never pursued a professional career at it. I started writing about music in university -- my first published review was of Miles' On The Corner. I discovered Miles when I was 18, following the trail from Jimi Hendrix, and got a chance to see him a number of times after the '81 comeback. In addition to belonging to The Miles List for a number of years, I attended the first two Miles Conferences in Washington University as a delegate and helped coordinate the Jazz Journalists Association's online Miles discussion. |
