Miles Ahead: Prestige Titles
The Miles Ahead database contains information on all of Miles Davis's Prestige recording
sessions. The original Prestige 12" LPs are listed, as are the Japanese Victor LP
(SMJ-6500 series) and CD (VICJ-23000 series) equivalents, as well as the Fantasy
OJC CD versions. Select a record from the drop-down list below, and press the "Details"
button -- this will return a table of Prestige issues, reissues, equivalents, etc.
Please note that I use the word "equivalent" a little loosely, to include issues
with substantial common material as well as issues with exactly the same titles.
If you prefer to see all of these listed on one page, see the
Prestige equivalents table elsewhere on this site.

In addition to the original Prestige 12" LPs, the Japanese Victor LP (SMJ-6500 series)
and CD (VICJ-23000 series) equivalents are listed, as well as the Fantasy OJC CD
versions. Most of the Victor CDs are now available in 20-bit/88.2KHz (K2) versions
(VICJ-2000 series) and in 24-bit K2 versions with cardboard sleeves (VICJ-60400
series).
Also listed are some of the more common U.S. 12" LP reissues, including twofers,
and also some pre-12" LP formats (78 rpm, 45 rpm, 10" LP). Prestige (and later Fantasy)
reissued these records many times, frequently with different covers. For a full
accounting of these matters, see the appendix to Michel Ruppli's excellent The
Prestige Label: A Discography (Westport: Greenwood Press, 1980). A full list
of the Prestige labels is available elsewhere on
this site.
All of the Prestige recordings (except for some false starts and studio chatter)
are included on Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings (Fantasy PCD
012: 12 LPs or 8 CDs). In Japan the set was re-done using 20-bit/88.2 KHz mastering
(Victor VICJ-40225/32). Some of the Prestige recordings are available on 16-bit
XRCDs from Victor as well: Cookin' (VICJ-60127); Relaxin' (VICJ-60125); Workin'
(VICJ-60126); Steamin' (VICJ-60128).
There are some superb vinyl reissues, too. In 1999 Analogue Productions issued a
limited-edition set of the five Prestige records by the "first quintet" (Miles,
Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin') -- The Great Prestige Recordings
(Analogue Productions APJ 035). That set is long out of print, but the LPs have
been released individually as well, along with several other titles from the Prestige
catalog: Musings of Miles, Walkin', Bags' Groove, and Miles Davis and the Modern
Jazz Giants. Several are available as either single 180-gram LPs or as two 200-gram
45 rpm LPs.
