This music was recorded at the first
Berkeley Jazz Festival, which occurred on April 7-8 at the
Greek Theatre. Davis was on the bill with Bill Evans, Horace Silver, John Handy,
the Modern Jazz Quartet, Gerald Wilson's Big Band, and Big Mama Thornton. This
set was performed indoors in the Harmon Gymnasium due to heavy rains.
There appear to be two sources for these tunes. The first tape, probably a soundboard
recording, begins with a short announcement from the stage and includes all of the
tunes listed above. The second, a recording of a broadcast of the Cabinet Tapes
show on KALX-FM, the University of California student radio station, does not include
the stage introduction or "Agitation," but includes an introduction and closing
announcement by the disk jockey. It is about 3% slower than the first tape.
The Davis Quintet, with Joe Henderson added as a second tenor saxophone, was booked
for a short engagement at the Village Vanguard (March 9-12); they then -- minus
Henderson -- embarked on another tour of the western U.S. with Ron Carter remaining
in New York, this time replaced by Stinson (here) or Buster Williams (the remainder
of the tour). After this Berkeley show the Davis Quintet was booked for two weeks
at the Both/And Club in San Francisco (April 11-23); they then moved to the Penthouse
Club in Seattle (April 24-29), and ended their tour with three nights at the Sands
Hotel in Hollywood (May 5-7), a Columbia Hollywood studio date (May 9), and a one-night
engagement at UCLA's Royce Hall (May 12). They returned to New York and played
the Village Vanguard again (June 2-4), then went to the Village Gate (July 4-16
opposite Dizzy Gillespie, and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman). They also
played at The Watts Summer Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles,
on August 21-22.
