12" LP: Mosaic MQ10-226
CD: Columbia Legacy C7K 90840, Sony SICP 620/5

This is the second of three recordings made at the fourth Juan-les-Pins Festival. The rhythm section, after playing together for only two months, is amazingly fluid and cohesive, and Davis' playing is very spirited on all three of the Antibes recordings.

Sony SRCS 9303 restores three of the issued titles to their full length:

  • "Autumn Leaves" - add 2:04 to ts solo (a clean edit at 4:36 of issued version removed 4:36-6:40 of master).
  • "Joshua" - add 2:00 to ts solo (a clean edit at 3:59 of issued version removed 3:59-5:59 of master).
  • "All of You" - add 0:59 to ts solo (a clean edit at 5:24 of issued version removed 5:24-6:23 of master); add 1:58 to p solo (audible splices at 8:22 and 9:21 removed 9:17-10:16 and 11:15-12:14 of master).

The entire concert is presented in performance order on Mosaic MQ10-266 and Columbia Legacy C7K 90840.

On Bandstand, Tokuma, and Jazz Door "Milestones" is wrongly listed as from New York 1958 with John Coltrane (!!).

The performance master for this session in the RTF/INA archives is on 1/2" Kodak tape (item #LD90773): the first reel contains André Francis' introduction and "Milestones"; the second contains "I Thought About You" (listed as "How About You") and "Joshua"; the third contains "All of You" and "Walkin'"; the fourth contains "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "The Theme."

I am grateful to Robert Elliott for supplying me with the recordings from the ORTF archives.

The Quintet was booked for concerts in Vichy (July 30) and Marselles (July 31) before returning to New York. No recordings are known to exist.
