It is not often that three complete studio takes of a tune are recorded by this group. Davis and Williams play especially well on take 9, but the master version (take 11) is more polished.

This is another in the ongoing series of New York studio sessions during May-July 1967. These sessions allowed the Quintet to develop new repertoire centered around original compositions. Only a few of these tunes -- "Masqualero," "Nefertiti," and "Riot" -- became staples of the Quintet's live performances, however.

After returning from the west coast in mid-May, the Quintet was booked at the Village Vanguard (June 2-4). They traveled to Atlanta GA for a concert on June 16 or 17, and to Newport RI for the Newport Jazz Festival (July 2). They were booked at the Village Gate (July 4-16 opposite Dizzy Gillespie, and August 15-27 opposite Ornette Coleman). They also played at The Watts Summer Festival, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, on August 21-22.
